Introduction: Many studies have investigated biological processes and personality factors underlying addiction. However, it seems necessary to know the effective mediating mechanisms between these factors and the phenomenon of addiction. In this regard, the present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the modeling of tendency to substance use based on brain behavioral systems and delayed reward discounting with the mediation of mindfulness.
Methods: The present study was a cross-sectional correlational study. The statistical population of this study was made up of all people over 14 years of age in Tehran. From among the statistical population, 390 people were selected through convenience sampling. The research tools were: The Iranian Addiction Potential Scale, BIS/BAS Scale, Monetary-Choice Questionnaire and The Mindful Attention Awareness Scale. For data analysis, Pearson correlation, structural equation modeling and SPSS and AMOS software were used.
Results: The findings indicated the appropriateness of the intended model. The obtained results indicate the indirect effect of delayed reward discounting (p < 0.05, b = - 0.52) and the behavioral activation system (p <0.05, b = - 0.39) on active tendency to substance use was through mindfulness. Also, the results show the indirect effect of delayed reward discounting (p <0.05, b = - 0.61) and the behavioral activation system (p <0.05, b = 0.36) was on the passive tendency to use drugs through mindfulness In addition, the results showed that the research variables explained a total of 79% of the variance of the active tendency to use drugs and 65% of the variance of the passive tendency to use drugs.
Conclusions: The results of the present study indicate that the behavioral activation system and Delayed reward discounting, directly and indirectly through mindfulness, can play an important role in predicting the tendency to use drugs. Therefore, the findings of this research indicate the importance of the component of mindfulness as a clinical concept in preventive and therapeutic interventions related to the behavioral activation system and Delayed reward discounting in people who have a tendency to use substance.
