Introduction: Obsessive-compulsive disorder is known as one of the most common psychological disorders, characterized by the presence of intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors, and has a significant impact on the quality of life of individuals. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the effect of group cognitive-behavioral therapy on rumination and obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms in married women.
Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design and a control group. The statistical population of this study included all women referring to clinics in Islamshahr in 2024, of which 30 were selected purposively and randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups. The measurement tools included the Nolenhoksma and Maro Rumination Scale (RRS) and the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Scale (Y-BOCS). The experimental group received group cognitive-behavioral therapy training in eight sessions, one session per week for 90 minutes. The analysis of covariance method was used with SPSS version 26 software to analyze the data.
Results: The findings showed that before the intervention, the experimental and control groups did not differ significantly in terms of rumination and obsessive-compulsive symptoms, but after the intervention, the groups differed significantly in terms of both variables (P<0.01). In other words, group cognitive-behavioral therapy reduced the amount of rumination and obsessive-compulsive symptoms in married women.
Conclusions: Overall, the research findings showed that group cognitive-behavioral therapy is an effective intervention for reducing rumination and the main symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder in married women; this method helps clients to more sustainably master the internal and external challenges caused by the disorder and improve their level of psychological well-being by teaching specialized cognitive-behavioral strategies.
